  • Protect Yourself

In a perfect world, anti-virus software would eliminate all the "bad stuff" from our computers and data. Unfortunately, this isn't exactly the case.

In fact, even though you may have updated anti-virus software running in the background, there is a high likelyhood that your computer is infected with malware. Most people assume that a well-working computer is a healthy computer, but that isn't always the case.

  • Expert Virus Removal

We all know computer viruses -- and other kinds of malware -- can cause problems ranging from irritating to catastrophic. Some malware replicates itself until it fills up all available space on your hard drive, turning your computer into a brick. Other kinds corrupt data on your machine or make your computer unstable. A few will even attempt to use your e-mail programs to distribute the malicious code to everyone in your contacts list. And there's always the possibility a cracker -- that's a malicious hacker -- will use malware to get remote access to your computer.

No one wants to own a computer infected with a nasty virus. That's why it's very important to practice safe computing habits and to install reliable anti-virus software. You can avoid most malware just by paying attention and staying away from a few common traps. If your anti-virus software is up to date, you should be in pretty good shape.

But once in a while, computer viruses get beyond our defenses. Maybe our anti-virus software is out of date or has been compromised by a particularly clever bit of code. Perhaps we clicked on a link by accident and activated a virus. Or someone else used our computer and downloaded some malware by mistake.

How do you know if your computer has been hit by a computer virus? If your anti-virus software is robust and up to date, you'll likely receive a message as the application scans your computer. That makes detecting the virus a breeze. But what if your software is out of date or the virus has managed to deactivate the anti-virus program? Are there signs you can watch out for that might indicate a virus?

As a matter of fact, there are several signs that could indicate the presence of malware on your computer. Assuming your anti-virus software hasn't alerted you to the presence of a virus, here are some indicators of malware on your computer:

If your computer has become unstable, that's a sign that something's wrong. Some malware messes with important files that keep your computer running properly. That could cause your computer to crash. If your computer crashes when you try to run a specific application or open a particular file, that tells you that something has corrupted the data. It could be malware.

Does your computer seem to run much more slowly than it used to? This could be the result of malware as the malicious code begins to drain your computer's processing resources. If you aren't running a resource-heavy application but your computer is very slow, you might have a computer virus.

Strange messages indicating that you can't access certain drives on your computer are another sign that something is wrong. In a similar vein, applications that won't run or files that won't open may also be the result of infection. Other indicators include hardware (like printers) that no longer respond to commands. While none of these guarantee the presence of a virus, they do suggest that something is wrong with your machine.

If you notice that file sizes are fluctuating even if you aren't accessing those files, that's another sign of a computer virus. And finally, if you access menus and their appearance is odd or distorted, you could be the victim of a malware attack.

It's important to remember that computer viruses are one potential cause of problems like the ones we've listed here, but that they aren't the only cause. If you believe your computer has been infected by a virus, don't panic. Call Rhode Island PC at (401) 484-7870 TODAY!

  • Why Choose Rhode Island PC?

Not only will we save you a significant amount of money, RHODE ISLAND PC is an EXPERT virus removal service with 24 hour turn-around in most cases. The well known office supply stores charge $149.99 for basic service. They install anti-virus software and sweep your computer. THAT'S IT! In SOME CASES this is all you need, but in many cases the damage caused by the virus needs to be repaired by professionals. Oh by the way...they also charge you $69.99 for "in store diagnostic"..that's not to repair anything they may find-that's for DIAGNOSTIC ONLY! RHODE ISLAND PC charges a flat fee of $100 for MOST virus infections, $125 for more serious infections...AND THERE IS NEVER A DIAGNOSTIC FEE! FREE DIAGNOSTIC!

In all fairness, the office supply stores are in business to sell computers- not fix them. Do you really think they care about your data? Your personal data, pictures, documents, etc are at risk. At Rhode Island PC, we take utmost care of your personal documents. We know most people do not regularily back up their computer. Viruses and malware can be very destructive and leave you venerable to identity theft. Most virus infections require more than a simple sweep of anti-virus software.

Infections usually write into the registry or permissions area of your computer, and create back door programming which allows them to remain on your system even though you've removed what is thought to be the main program of the actual virus or trojan. In truth, however, that program maintains itself on your computer replicating like a bad cold and continues to infect your system. At RHODE ISLAND PC we go through your complete system filing - using multiple programs to clean, erase, change and fix permissions. Then we hand select and clean items in your registry and other areas.

So beware of other places where the tech might say they can have it back to you in an hour... because who knows what's lurking in your computer... only to re-emerge at a later time - where they can hopefully collect more money from you again.

RHODE ISLAND PC charges between 100.00 and 125.00 for an entire fix and repair of virus infections on your computer or laptop - and we don't just reload windows or new operating systems that might be pirated onto your computer - instead we actually do it the right way... Allowing you to keep your precious documents, pictures, images, files and programs.

Unfortunately, sometimes the damage is beyond repair. Usually, however, your personal data can be saved. At RHODE ISLAND PC, we offer to back up all your data, COMPLETELY wipe the hard drive (using government standard DoD 5220.22M for security), cleanly install a new updated operating system, install and test all drivers, install Anti-Virus software, and return your data back to the system...all for $175.00!!! If the data is not important to save, then for $125 we will perform the government standard wipe and reinstallation of the updated Windows and all drivers. The computer will be like factory new condition-updated and without all the bloatware software that came with the new computer. In both cases, any third-party software (ex: TurboTax, etc) will need to be reinstalled by you. We do not have the disks. Also, your printer will need to be reinstalled by you. If you do not have the installation disk, the installation program/drivers can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

  • FAKE Anti-Virus Software Pop-Ups

Rogue security software, also known as "scareware," is software that appears to be beneficial from a security perspective but provides limited or no security, generates erroneous or misleading alerts, or attempts to lure users into participating in fraudulent transactions. How does rogue security software get on my computer? Rogue security software designers create legitimate looking pop-up windows that advertise security update software. These windows might appear on your screen while you surf the web. The "updates" or "alerts" in the pop-up windows call for you to take some sort of action, such as clicking to install the software, accept recommended updates, or remove unwanted viruses or spyware. When you click, the rogue security software downloads to your computer. Rogue security software might also appear in the list of search results when you are searching for trustworthy antispyware software, so it is important to protect your computer.

What does rogue security software do? Rogue security software might report a virus, even though your computer is actually clean. The software might also fail to report viruses when your computer is infected. Inversely, sometimes, when you download rogue security software, it will install a virus or other malicious software on your computer so that the software has something to detect.

Some rogue security software might also: Lure you into a fraudulent transaction (for example, upgrading to a non-existent paid version of a program). Use social engineering to steal your personal information. Install malware that can go undetected as it steals your data. Launch pop-up windows with false or misleading alerts. Slow your computer or corrupt files. Disable Windows updates or disable updates to legitimate antivirus software. Prevent you from visiting antivirus vendor websites.

If you think you might have rogue security software on your computer: Call RHODE ISLAND PC at (401) 484-7870 for complete removal.

  • FAKE FBI MoneyPak Virus

You are infected with a VERY SERIOUS VIRUS commonly called "ransomware." YOU ARE NOT IN TROUBLE WITH THE FBI, AND DO NOT PAY THE FEE "TO REMOVE"!! If you are infected with ransomware such as the FBI virus, your personal and private data and computer system functionality is already at a very high risk. If the infected computer is powered ON and connected to the internet, Trojans horses may have complete control of the computer system and access to every piece of stored data. The main purpose of this ransomware is to target and scare unsuspecting victims into believing they are in trouble with a department of authority in order to willingly pay the fine stated on the prompted "alert page", but that does not mean the infection will not hibernate (remain undetected) on an infected system in order to exploit vulnerabilities utilizing other malicious practices aside from locking the system. It has been reported that the FBI virus may collect private information while remaining in the background.

The FBI virus, also referred to as the FBI Moneypak virus, Citadel Reveton, and more are terms for ransomware we discovered in 2012 that cyber criminals use in attempt to disguise themselves as the FBI. The FBI virus utilizes Trojan horses (Trojan.Ransomlock.R, reveton) in order to lock computer systems (Your PC is blocked). The FBI virus applies a variety of unethical tactics, including social engineering in attempt to persuade unsuspecting victims to pay an unnecessary fine by making fraudulent claims that the computer has been involved in illegal activity (cyber crime) (downloaded or distributed copyrighted material or viewed child pornography, etc.) and demands a penalty fine of $100, $200, $300, or more to be paid in order to unlock the computer system within the allotted time of 48 to 72 hours by use of Moneypak cards (REloadit virus, Ultimate Game Card Virus, Ukash Virus). The FBI Moneypak ransomware virus also states on the fake FBI screen that you (the computer owner) may see jail time if the fine is not paid in time.

Please note, this occurrence is the symptom of dangerous malware called ransomware. The claims made by the FBI virus on the fake FBI page are not real. You are not in trouble with the FBI, paying the fine using Ukash vouchers and Moneypak cards will not fix this particular malware, and using an activation number to remove the FBI virus will likely initiate a response that leads to further complications.

If your computer is infected with this trojan virus: Call RHODE ISLAND PC at (401) 484-7870 for complete removal.

  • Windows Blue Screens

A Blue Screen of Death, also called a STOP Error, will appear when an issue is so serious that Windows must stop completely. A BSOD is usually hardware or driver related, however many are the result of serious trojan virus infections that have corrupted critical Windows files. One typical trojan virus that displays a Blue Screen is the VUNDO Trojan Virus. Viruses like the Vundo Trojan horse interfere with the normal working of the computer system with repeated pop-ups and frequently block access to websites such as Google. They find their way into the memory by bypassing the security of the web browser program. The Vundo Trojan creates hidden files from the main Trojan DLL and remains safe from being detected during an anti-virus scan.

Vundo is a particularly frustrating Trojan horse that causes pop-ups and now and again causes flaws to the computer system by blocking access to some websites like Google. Trojan resides in the memory through the internet browser's setup program. On Windows' operating systems, the DLL Trojan files are labeled as eight random upper and lower case characters and reside in the system32 directory. This will create hidden files, which will be located during a virus scanning process, instead of the DLL file itself.

Any Blue Screen of Death message should be handled immediately. Call RHODE ISLAND PC at (401) 484-7870 for repair.

  • The FACEBOOK "Koobface" Virus

Facebook is trying to educate users more about scams that seep through its News Feed, but according to antivirus firm McAfee, there has been an increase in the first quarter in reports of Koobface, a virus that hijacks Facebook accounts. USA Today described how Koobface operates: Its creators initially sent Facebook users friendly messages asking them to click on a link to see a video. Doing so called up another message asking the recipient to click on an executable file — a small computer program — needed to upgrade a video player required to view the video. In a classic bait-and-switch, clicking on the file instead turned over control of the PC to the attackers.

The worm then automatically sent similar viral messages from the victim's account to his or her Facebook friends. By clicking on the malicious file, the victim unintentionally chooses to run the bad code. So no actual hack of the computer's hard drive is needed.

If you suspect any computer virus, or if your computer is incredibly slow, or acting unusual: Call RHODE ISLAND PC at (401) 484-7870 for repair.
